New name, new models

-

After 10 years in South Africa, well-known Chinese brand name GWM is changing its name to Haval, after more than 55 000 vehicles were sold via more than 40 dealers. The reason for the name change is because the old GWM is now fully controlled by the Chinese parent company, and the local branch has been renamed to Haval Motors South Africa Pty Ltd. There will, however, still be GMW vehicles for sale, among them the relaunched H5 and H6 sports utility vehicles, as well as new versions of the Steed bakkies. But the big news is the recent launch of the Haval H2. Although the Haval brand is still unfamiliar in South Africa, it’s well known in China as GMW’s premier brand (almost like Lexus and Toyota, if you will) and last year they sold more than one million vehicles and was the top seller in the sports utility vehicle market. The Haval H2 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that develops 105 kW and 202 Nm. The front wheels are driven via a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox and the interior is quite luxurious compared to other GWM products – the H2 even has a high-resolution touch screen for the infotainment system. The reassuring news is that it also a five-star NCAP crash safety rating. At the same time, Haval has also launched the smaller H1 crossover locally. All Haval and GWM models have a 5-year/ 100 000 km warranty, as well as a 5-year roadside assistance plan.
