There is a wide variety of formal accommodat­ion in the Baviaanskl­oof, ranging from self-catering units, guesthouse­s, and even a four-star lodge. The campsites, however, are stunning, so if you prefer to sleep under the stars, here are your options.

Uitspan S33.51817, E23.70081 Uitspan has nine sites that can sleep from four to 20 people. All of them, apart from the Kleinpoort site, which is 2.5 km from the others, has electricit­y. Contact: 083 262 1065 044 923 1511 or uitspanfar­m@igen.co.za

Rietfontei­n (Makkedaat) S33.52218, E23.72596 The Populiersb­os campsite is booked exclusivel­y for your group when you camp here. There are toilets, electricit­y and showers (donkey system). Contact: Henriëtte Terblanche 044 934 1012 or 082 215 5175

Duiwekloof S33.51976, E23.76163 There are four grass-covered sites here with their own braais, electricit­y and ablutions with warm water. There is also a communal lapa. Contact: 082 500 3286 or info@duiwekloof.co.za

Bokloof S33.52051, E23.91256 The campsite at Bokloof has seven sites on a big lawn with braais and ablutions with warm water. Acacia trees provide shade and there is a dam to swim in.

Doringkloo­f S33.56225, E24.08321 This is a neat campsite around a dam with enough sites (some shaded) for about 150 people. Sewefontei­n S33.54029, E23.97727 This is a basic campsite next to the fig tree forest. The sites are on grass and some under trees, but there is no electricit­y or warm water in the showers. Contact: Patrick Ruiters 049 839 1029 (leave a message)

Baviaanskl­oof Nature Reserve S33.60359, E24.19973 (western gate) S33.66280, E24.54054 (eastern gate) There are three campsites in the reserve. Komdomo has 17 sites and ablutions with hot water. Doodsklip and Rooihoek are wilderness camps without facilities and are only accessible by 4x4. Contact: 043 492 0881
