Local cricketers on the front foot

- Dave Savides

THE King Cetshwayo (KC) cricket team has enjoyed a well-earned festive season rest and is raring to attack the second half of the season, which commences against Pinetown away on 14 January.

Wrapping up the season so far, it started with an inter-district tournament in Stanger, at which the team played three matches, losing one and winning two.

In the Castle Premier T20 Cup competition, RH Construction KC played 10 matches, winning four and losing four, with two rained out.

They finished 6th and, unlike last season, missed the semi-finals.

Best performances with the bat were Dale van der Merwe with unbeaten knocks if 66 and 61 and Albertus Basson with 61.

Starring with the ball were Niel Jordan 3/7, Bruce Tembo 3/18 and Stephan Joubert 3/18.

‘We were put in a disadvantaged position by the KZN Cricket Union as there were three KZN Coastal Districts matches during the T20 competition, and with our union supplying an average of six players, this weakened our local team immensely,’ said KC manager/coach Bryan van Aswegen.

‘This has been addressed and should be sorted out for the next season.’

Main competition

The Castle Premier League 50-over competition started in October and to date King Cetshwayo has played 10 matches, winning six and losing four, and are sitting in tie 4th place on the log.

Best so far with the bat are Jason Redinger 85, Eugene Zwart 61 and Stephan Joubert 49; with the ball Niel Jordan 6/20, Dale van der Merwe 5/44 and Jason Redinger 4/10.

‘We have unfortunately lost our captain Eugene Zwart who has relocated to Cape Town, and there are big shoes to be filled.

Jason Redinger has taken over we wish him all the best.

‘There are ten more matches left in the season and the team is looking forward to the challenge for a top three final position,’ said Van Aswegen

‘We are fortunate to have the services of local Dolphin quickie Daryn Dupavillon playing for us whilst under rehabilitation from injury until he reaches full fitness and takes his place back in the Dolphins and future Proteas set up.’
