- Gugu Myeni

THE King Cetshwayo District Municipality hosted its second integrated development plan roadshow in Richards Bay last week.

The roadshow, which started in Mthonjaneni Municipality, aims to obtain community input on plans for the 2018/19 financial year.

District Mayor Nonhle Mkhulisi outlined infrastructure development, socio-economic projects and service delivery.

‘This roadshow is not to only present our plans, but also to get input from the public on issues that may be considered in the compilation of the IDP,’ Mkhulisi said.

The key focus areas included potable water supply to four of the five local municipalities, domestic waste water and sewage disposal, municipal roads, regulation of passenger transport services and municipal health issues.

‘By 2035 the King Cetshwayo District Municipality will be a cohesive, economically viable district with sustainable strategic infrastructure supporting job creation through radical economic transformation, rural development and the promotion of our heritage,’ the mayor said.

Mkhulisi also highlighted a number of projects such as the N2 strategic corridor development plan, Richards Bay Port expansion, the upgrade and expansion around Alkantstrand beach, Nkandla’s smart growth centre and uMfolozi’s industrial development node.

‘Municipalities have the responsibility of ensuring that social and economic development is prioritised.

‘They need to identify and market new economic opportunities, as well as create an enabling environment for local businesses through efficient and effective service and infrastructure delivery,’ she said.
