‘We went with friends who had been a few times – they’re dairy farmers here in Howick. In the KZN Midlands we have rolling green hills. The Tankwa landscape is completely different – it was quite an eye-opener for us to experience that desert nothingness, how beautiful it can be.

‘At AfrikaBurn, no one has anything better than what you decide is going to be good for you. I think that’s where true colours really shine and people act like themselves. It was a wonderful experience to see that different people of all ages could be exactly the same – especially the age thing; we’re all in our fifties. No one flashes money around, because nothing is for sale. Everyone is equal.’
