‘I don’t see AfrikaBurn as a world without rules – a different set of rules applies there. Every year it’s a different experience, because it is based on what you make of it. It’s about active participation instead of passive consumption. I enjoy it as quality time away with my daughter, connecting with different people and cultures.
‘For me, it’s not a life-changing experience that’s disconnected from our reality, like many people describe it, because I challenge myself that way regularly. I wonder how many South Africans challenge themselves this way by, for example, going into a township with a friend and trying to understand what’s different to their default world. I think it’s white people’s version of a changed environment, and they could have a lot more of these kinds of experiences if they were just a bit more openminded generally.’ ✤
