SLEEPING POSITIONS

-

IF YOU SLEEP ON YOUR SIDE:

This position is best, as it helps to maintain a neutral spine (‘natural’ curvature of the spine). A firm to extra-firm pillow ensures your spinal alignment is supported at a consistent height. Latex and foam are good options.

IF YOU SLEEP ON YOUR BACK:

A medium-to-firm pillow cradles the natural curvature of your upper spine, providing support under the head, neck and shoulders. Foam is a good option. Putting another pillow under your knees will help to maintain a neutral spine.

IF YOU SLEEP ON YOUR STOMACH (THIS POSITION IS BEST AVOIDED):

When you sleep on your stomach, the arch in your lower back is increased, causing compression. Also, you have to turn your head to the side to breathe, so your neck is rotated, causing one side to be compressed and the other, elongated. If you do sleep on your stomach, a soft pillow will provide the support you need and help prevent arching of the spine. Choose a soft, plump pillow that cushions your head and neck at a comfortable angle without raising your head too far. Synthetic, feathers and down are good options for keeping it low.
