BY DOUGLAS ADAMS – totally quirky, anarchic and fascinating. Can’t wait for the next series.

2. THE HANDMAID’S TALE

BY MARGARET ATWOOD – it’s won about a gazillion awards and stars the amazing Elizabeth Moss. Futuristic, dystopian… uncomfortably close to the bone.

3. HOLES

BY LOUIS SACHAR – one of the best books ever, and this is a great – and oddly moving – adaptation. It’s a kids’ movie, but don’t let that put you off for a second.

4. THE BIG SHORT

BY MICHAEL LEWIS – a funny, smart and very entertaining look at the sub-prime crash. Look out for Margot Robbie in a bubble bath explaining how it all works…

5. GONE GIRL

BY GILLIAN FLYNN – Rosamund Pike being very brilliant and very convincingly creepy; Ben Affleck just being his somewhat creepy self.
