DRY CLEANING

- - Liesl

You’re not supposed to wash your hair every day, or so they say. But my hair is blonde and very fine, so by day two it looks greasy and limp, no matter what. Throw in the water crisis and I was on a mission: to find a dry shampoo I actually liked. Here are my top five finds.

Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo for light tones: The holy grail of dry shampoos, this smells amazing (just like the Argan Oil) and it makes your hair look really clean, without that weird, crunchy feel. It has a slight white cast when you spray it on, but then again it’s formulated for blondes, so that’s probably on purpose. The only reason I don’t have cases of this product is the price. It lasts me a while, but R415 is still pretty steep, no?

Batiste Tropical dry shampoo: I didn’t think I’d like this. I’ve bought Batiste before, the volumising one, and it made my hair feel like straw. I bought this one purely for the smell – I mean, who doesn’t want to smell like a piña colada? – and I love it. It’s great value for the price (R48,99) and the 50ml travel size is super convenient – you can just chuck it in your handbag or gym bag. Although, if you do the math, the bigger bottle works out much cheaper, at R79,95 for 200ml.

Kevin Murphy Dry Clean: It definitely does the job, but my only gripe is the smell: it’s very sweet and it lingers all day. (I can’t quite put my finger on what it is exactly, but I want to say there’s some vanilla in there.) R430 for 250ml.

Chi Restage Dry Shampoo: At first I was baffled by this: it makes your roots look even oilier, which seems counter-productive. But don’t worry, that’s supposed to happen. Let it dry, then massage it and brush through your hair – it disappears completely. I have no idea how spraying oils in your hair absorbs the oil in your hair, but hey, it works. If you don’t like the slightly powdery feel of a dry shampoo, this is the one for you: it has the feel of a hairspray with absolutely no white cast. R450 for about 160ml. Girlz Only Dry Shampoo: It says ‘no residue’ on the bottle, and it’s no lie – this had zero white cast and freshened up my roots without that gritty feel. And it’s only R45 for 200ml!
