DNA SWAB TEST

- – Kelli

Did you know that a simple cheek swab is all it takes to get a close look at your genes, and pinpoint any health and skin concerns? Optiphi skincare has joined forces with DNAlysis to make this treatment more accessible – I was so excited to try it!

I was told to swab the inside of my cheeks before having breakfast and coffee. Two types of tests are available. The first (DNA Skin) focuses on the genetic risk factors specific to your skin, and includes personalised recommendations of Optiphi skin products and treatment plans. The second (DNA Skin Plus) is pricier, and focuses on the genetic risk factors specific to your skin, nutrition and lifestyle, to improve your skin holistically.

Three weeks after sending the swab to Joburg, where the lab is based, I received a 20-page document by email detailing my genetic results. The test included a Skype session with an expert: registered dietician Jessica Pieterse explained it all, answered my questions and gave me advice.

MY SKIN RESULTS

My firmness and elasticity need a boost, so I was advised to increase my vitamin C and iron intake. My vitamin D levels were also on the low side, which I can remedy by spending 10 to 15 minutes per day in direct sunlight. My sun sensitivity, pigmentation, sun damage, protection and repair factors were all normal – ‘normal’ meaning ‘nothing out of the ordinary’.

RECOMMENDED DIET PLAN

Jessica advised me to stick to a Mediterranean diet: I am to eat fish and seafood at least twice a week as well as a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, olive oil, beans, nuts, legumes, seeds and herbs. I’m allowed three to four glasses of red wine a week, limited meat and sweets, and moderate portions of poultry, eggs and dairy. I also need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
