What are the fashion rules you live by, and why? Fashion show director Jan Malan is my mentor. He taught me about great taste. Jan told me: ‘Never smell cheap. Rather wear no perfume at all than smell cheap.’ Also, don’t be afraid to spend on shoes, bags and watches – you can play around with everything else.

How has being a former model infuenced your style?

When I started working as a show producer it was difficult to get people to take me seriously; all they saw was a model. They didn’t think I had anything of value to add. That’s really influenced my style. So I stay away from clothing that makes me look like a model. Kaftans are regal and ooze power. I dress to intimidate.

How do you pick out your outfit in the morning?

I’m very lucky to work in the fashion industry so I don’t have a typical work wardrobe. What I wear depends on my mood that day. When I go to meetings, I usually wear a kaftan. I try not to wear bodyhugging clothing.

Do you have a favourite local fashion designer? Tasleem Bulbulia – she was way ahead of her time. I have trousers that I bought from her 10 years ago and people still ask me where I got them. I also love Klûk CGDT, and I have a few David Tlale pieces that I save for special events.

What inspires your style? I’m very particular about what I wear. Admittedly, it’s not very accessible and is a bit pricey. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not a labels girl. I stay away from trends as I prefer not to collect things that don’t make sense.
