Tricks of the trade

We asked our experts to give us advice on shopping for clothes while navigating the maze that is inconsistent sizing.

1 Be open to change

‘Don’t take your size as a given,’ Kelly says. ‘Think of it as a fresh start every time you shop a new brand.’

2 Try, try and try again

Tracey says that even in this ecommerce world, it’s important to try on clothes as much as you can. ‘Remember, if you don’t try, you won’t find the top that truly flatters your figure.’

3 A TikTok hack

Cherné credits TikTok for this hack, which she says actually works. ‘Wrap the waist of the jeans around your neck from behind, like a cape. If the ends just touch in front, it’s a good fit for your waist. If they don’t touch, it’s too small; if they overlap, it’s too big.’

4 Stick to brands that work for you

‘Once you find a brand that fits you well, stick to it,’ Betina says. ‘Consistency in sizing is more likely within the same brand.’

5 Measure yourself

‘Know your body measurements,’ Kelly says. Betina adds that labels can be deceiving, and choosing the right size based on measurements always ensures a better fit.

6 The silhouette matters

Kelly and Betina say they’ve added a function on the Me&B website that will tell shoppers how a garment should fit. ‘Always consider the style of the garment,’ Betina says: Is it oversized, regular or fitted?’ Adjust your size choice accordingly for a more flattering look.

7 Be an informed consumer

Cherné believes we should follow Gen Z’s lead and stay informed about the brands we buy from. ‘Research their size charts and be vigilant for any signs of “humility sizing”. Educating yourself empowers you to support brands that align with your values.’

8 Prioritise fit over size

‘Remember, clothes are meant to fit you, not the other way round,’ Cherné says. Don’t stress about the number on the tag; focus on finding the perfect fit for your body.

9 It’s not you, it’s them

Don’t internalise sizing issues. ‘If a top doesn’t fit as expected, it’s not a reflection of your body but rather a flaw in the garment’s sizing,’ Tracey says. ‘Remember, your beauty isn’t defined by a piece of clothing.’

10 Use SizeCharter

Cherné recommends this site to find your size in major brands. Go to sizecharter.com, enter your measurements and click ‘Find My Size’.
