Here’s to many more centuries

The JSE is proud to have evolved with the SA economy and the country’s capital markets, says CEO Nicky Newton-king

-

It’s not often that centenarians are in better nick more than a century on from when they were born.

But for the JSE, which turned 130 years old this year, the exchange is, more than ever, a thriving marketplace that trades a daily average of more than R21bn in the equity market.

We are proud of how the JSE has grown and developed with the SA economy. That evolution is also reflected in the changing nature of the companies listed on the JSE.

No longer the preserve of mining giants, today the JSE is also home to the likes of national champions such as Naspers, Firstrand, Standard Bank, Capitec, Nedbank, Barclays Africa, MTN, Bidcorp, Sasol, Shoprite, Sanlam and Remgro. Many of these have raised their first capital on the JSE and used this to become the giants they are today.

We continue to work hard every day to provide our clients with best-in-class products and services, world-class regulation and a financial market infrastructure that all our stakeholders can trust.

We take our role in the economy very seriously and continue to play a part in building our country through our engagements with big corporates and government to ensure that SA is a country that works for everyone. While we have made progress, we continue to do more, to make sure that the JSE can be counted among the best capital market infrastructures in emerging markets.

With that said, I hope you enjoy this snapshot of the evolution of our products, our contribution to transforming the capital markets industry and our contribution to our country. We will not rest on our laurels and look forward to working with you as we chart the next stage of our journey.

What it means: JSE is reinventing itself to keep up and lead SA’S investor community into the next century
