The Silo Hotel, V&A Waterfront
Yet another blustery and rainy day in Cape Town, but who cares when you’re enjoying Royal Tea on the sixth floor of the Silo Hotel and soaking up the exceptional views of the V&A Waterfront? The setting is pure class: the décor is opulent, the furniture eclectic, colourful and bold, and there are unique “pillow” glass windows. It’s no surprise that it’s an artistic space; the Zeitz MOCAA is next to the hotel.
We love being served two separate offerings — one savoury, one sweet — on a striking Art Deco tiered platter. It’s not overwhelming, but everything has an immaculate form, with precise angles contrasting with softness, and the pastries themselves are pieces of art. Cakes include a beyonddivine chocolate mousse and a beautifully curated petit gâteau. The savoury options are delectable. And, at last, a scone worth writing home about — small, light and fresh.
After tea, art concierge Michael Jacobs walks us around
the hotel, where Royal Portfolio founder Liz Biden has created one of the most visually striking hotel spaces in the city. Jacobs’s enthusiasm is infectious as he speaks about the art that adorns the space. Some of the works highlight history that people have deliberately tried to forget; others are about transcending the local environment; yet others speak to alter egos.
With the bonus of the guided art tour, this feels like a space where cake and culture run in tandem; where artfully presented food blends with the artistic environment.
