Scribante painting auctioned for Carpe Diem
The ninth annual Gourmets and Gourmands championed by Hartman & Sons Butchery on behalf of Carpe Diem School will be a stylish French affair.
In the words of Ernest
Hemingway, “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” And this year’s event promises to be quite a feast with the added magic of a painting by local artist, René Scribante, to be put up for auction. Scribante donated the artwork, which was inspired by Claude Monet. Funds raised will be allocated to the special needs learners of Carpe Diem School.
The school helps children from all over the Southern Cape and is undoubtedly an integral part of the Garden Route and Karoo communities.
Scribante was a gifted student who later qualified as a radiographer, specialising in cardiac imaging, CT scanning and MRI. In 1993 she started channelling her artistic side and qualified as an interior decorator. In January 2002 she started taking art classes with Liz Stumke in Wilderness who helped her discover and develop her style of painting. It was soon clear that she is talented. In December 2009 she started exhibiting at her own gallery, The Attic, in George. Her 2015 exhibition, 125! Years after Vincent van Gogh, commemorated his life and work. She repeated this exhibition with success at the Klein Karoo Klassique in 2016. In the same year Scribante also opened an art gallery in the heart of Oudtshoorn with Tersia Hoffman and Esther Zonnenstein. She also took part in this year’s KKNK.
The Loft Studio in George is now open every first Saturday of the month for ‘Coffee with Local Artists’. Her French country scenes and flowers, as well as her more recent Capetonian architectural heritage buildings, are very popular.
