Complaint about state of the grass verges falls on deaf ears

- Robert Smith, George:

My letter to the George Herald a few weeks ago regarding the state of the grass verges bordering the newly constructed sidewalks seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

So, I took a walk recently along the sidewalks close to my home and snapped a few pictures which highlight the problem.

These are just a few of many examples of the lack of effort on the part of the municipal contractor/s involved to clean the sites and properly reinstate the areas bordering the new sidewalks. Recent letters have suggested that persons like myself are unnecessarily critical of our municipality, as they perform better than many other municipalities in the country. Granted, they do. However, that is no reason to expect less from them than we would from a contractor working on our own property. Parks, roads and pavements are maintained by the municipality and its contractors for the public benefit, and paid for by ratepayers. They should thus be maintained to a suitable standard.

Considering that this work has been carried out using ratepayers' money, the question arises - would you accept this standard of work from a paving contractor who was working on your property? Or would you insist that he clean the site properly?
