Art competition bursts with colour

-

Garden Route SPCA recently announced the winners of their art competition with the theme "We love all animals" at George Museum. The competition was organised by the Garden Route SPCA's education unit and received over 760 entries from local school children. The entrants truly celebrated South Africa's reptiles, mammals, insects, four and even eightlegged friends.

Judged by local art experts, including Daan Roestorf who was previously a professor and head of the Department of Education (school art) at the University of Stellenbosch, the contest showed that there is serious talent in George.

Prizes were awarded to winners of the various age groups and Scava chairperson Maura St.John announced that they had awarded a special accolade to Athene Hage from Glenwood House, who painted fish in seemingly moving water.

This project was held in conjunction with Friends of the Museum, Scava and the

Bella Smith Art and Culture Foundation (BSACF). The Garden Route SPCA is very thankful to everyone who was involved and thanks all the schools and their learners who entered, the societies who supported the contest and Lorinda Hakimi at the museum, who gave a great deal of assistance to the SPCA. Also the South Cape Association for Visual Arts (Scava), and art experts Tim Kerby of the BSACF and Liz Stumke for their added evaluations of the artworks.

The display in the museum's hall, next to the library in Caledon Street, will be open for two weeks yet. Everyone is invited by the museum to view the entries for free between 09:00 and 16:00.
