Cuppa for Cansa arrives on Spring Day

-

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) is celebrating its

87th anniversary of fighting cancer. “No one could have predicted the widespread impact it would have when the then National Cancer Association was established in 1931,” says Amelia Thiart, a community mobiliser from the Southern Cape Karoo Region.

This year they are hosting the Cuppa For Cansa fundraiser on 1 September at the Eden Church Hall. As always, it promises to be a morning tea filled with pampering, great entertainment, lots of prizes and a silent auction. About 500 women attend this event every year.

The Cansa regional office George runs the Irma Bruschi Care Home, which provides accommodation, and transport to and from treatment centres. The home offers quality of life to out-of-town cancer patients of limited means for the duration of their treatment. Some of these patients come from areas like Riversdale, Stilbaai, Albertinia and Uniondale. Furthermore, Cansa George provides medical equipment for diagnosed patients such as wheelchairs, mattresses, wigs etc.

Today, Cansa plays a leading role in cancer research and cancer control policy development. They also provide care, support and education to South Africans affected by this dreaded disease. They believe in educating the public and creating awareness about the warning signs of cancer, as the risk can be reduced by early detection.

Thiart says they will continue to fight until they face a tomorrow without cancer. “It is only when cancer has touched our lives and we’ve experienced its terrible impact that we can fully appreciate the vital importance of our service to cancer patients,” she says.
