Trio de Musique
delights audience with firm favourites
The enchanting Trio de Musique was in excellent form on Sunday 5 August with a midday performance at Fancourt as part of its annual Classic Concert Series. Fancourt particularly aims to promote local talent and art.
The programme consisted of well-loved favourites from Broadway, jazz and modern classics, with a generous dollop of tango music thrown in to warm up a rather chilly Sunday afternoon.
The trio consists of three Cape Town musicians: Thomas de
Bruin (flute), Ariella Caira (cello) and Albert Combrink (piano). It was apparent that all three are highly versatile and that they easily found musical common ground. Each member is an accomplished musician with experience of chamber music, and working solo as well as with orchestras.
The tango pieces by Piazolla had the audience tapping and doing imaginary sharp dance turns. These were the "fillings" in a series of delicious sandwiches, in a manner of speaking. The "bread" holding it together were transcribed favourites, including the Pearl Fishers duet by Bizet, I could have danced all night (Frederick Loewe) and Smoke gets in your eyes (Jerome Kern). The undoubted highlight of the afternoon was the final number, Barcelona (Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé), which was met with thunderous applause.
The trio's effortless musical integration was an example to aspiring musicians on how to play together so that the music remains the most important constant. All three had their moments to shine individually, but their collaboration in creating a sound with unity meant that music was the winner - as it should be.
Georgians should take note of the concert series. It deserves our support in greater numbers and it also assists a charitable cause.
