Housing in George: A look at the present and the plans for the future
The direction the George Municipality has laid down in its spatial development framework (SDF) is for a denser city which brings people closer to their work and will ultimately ensure the optimal use of our infrastructure and services. The municipality faces an immense task in accommodating a constantly increasing demand for low-cost and affordable (Gap) housing on the one hand, and on the other hand also satisfying the high end of the market’s need for space and services. Part of the solution it proposes, is the integration of different levels of housing. How this will play out, Georgians will start to see with the first ever large affordablehousing project being proposed in the upmarket King George and Die Bult neighbourhoods. Alida de Beer has investigated the state of housing projects in George and plans being put forward.
