Low blood stock levels in W Cape still worrying

Since the start of winter, the Western Province Blood Transfusio­n Service (WPBTS) has never had stock to last more than one or two days. This situation can be critical for patients who need blood transfusio­ns. The WPBTS aims to maintain a level of five days’ stock as a “safe” level.

The WPBTS is calling on everyone in the Western Cape who are eligible to donate blood. “WPBTS is still experienci­ng critically low blood stocks levels. We need donors who are eligible to donate, to make a life-changing commitment and make the difference in someone’s life,” says Michelle Vermeulen, corporate public relations officer at WPBTS.

Persons between the ages of 16 and

65, weighing more than 50kg, who are in general good health and lead a safe lifestyle, are eligible to donate blood. Donors must remember to eat a substantia­l meal within three to four hours before donating.

UNDERGRADU­ATE BURSARY : BSC PHYSICS

The National Metrology Institute of South Africa through its Human Capital Developmen­t (HCD) programme develops a pipeline of skilled scientists, engineers, and technologi­sts to address current and future skills needs. A bursary opportunit­y at a recognised South African University is available for students and graduates. Upon completion, the bursar will be required to work one year for every year sponsored at NMISA.

Successful graduate will follow an exciting career at NMISA in the Science of Accurate Measuremen­t (Metrology). NMISA is the custodian of the South Africa national measuremen­t standards, thus you will be working closely with experts on the realisatio­n of the Internatio­nal System (SI) units in the Electricit­y & Magnetism division.
