Low blood stock levels in W Cape still worrying
Since the start of winter, the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) has never had stock to last more than one or two days. This situation can be critical for patients who need blood transfusions. The WPBTS aims to maintain a level of five days’ stock as a “safe” level.
The WPBTS is calling on everyone in the Western Cape who are eligible to donate blood. “WPBTS is still experiencing critically low blood stocks levels. We need donors who are eligible to donate, to make a life-changing commitment and make the difference in someone’s life,” says Michelle Vermeulen, corporate public relations officer at WPBTS.
Persons between the ages of 16 and
65, weighing more than 50kg, who are in general good health and lead a safe lifestyle, are eligible to donate blood. Donors must remember to eat a substantial meal within three to four hours before donating.

UNDERGRADUATE BURSARY : BSC PHYSICS
The National Metrology Institute of South Africa through its Human Capital Development (HCD) programme develops a pipeline of skilled scientists, engineers, and technologists to address current and future skills needs. A bursary opportunity at a recognised South African University is available for students and graduates.
