Lumber challenge to star at George show
Here's an event you simply can't miss if you live anywhere this side of the Limpopo! The annual George Agricultural Show takes place from 29 August to 1 September, and one of the highlights will be the Husqvarna and TopSaw Forest & Garden stand.TopSaw Forest & Garden, everybody's favourite Husqvarna dealer from George, Mossel Bay and Knysna, has won best stand at the show for the past two years, and there's a good chance it might scoop the trophy again for 2018.
Using the theme “Back to Basics”, Topsaw and Husqvarna (which has been in business for 330 years and is famed worldwide for its forestry equipment) have arranged an extraordinary lumber challenge, the likes of which hasn't been seen in the area for almost a decade, which will thrill spectators and participants alike. Expect awesome chainsaw racing, chainsaw carving, axe-throwing demos, and firemaking competitions for women.
"The show, and our stand, will be bigger and better than ever before," said Gert Rautenbach, who handles marketing for Topsaw Forest & Garden. He said the highlight of the lumber challenge would be "hot saw" demos, where chainsaws have been tuned to their ultimate performance levels.
"We have two professional Husqvarna chainsaw racers demonstrating this section - Shaun Jones from the Western Cape and Charles Henderson from Pietermaritzburg - and this should be something worth writing home about as well," he added. And that's not all. There will also be a directional tree-felling competition - where the tree has to hit a specific peg in the ground. Oh, and you can watch guys trying to chop a matchstick with an axe; and see how beautiful planks are cut from a tree, using a Husky chainsaw, in the Alaskan mill demo.
They've also arranged a fun fundraising competition, Nail-a-friend, where competitors will try to knock a nail into a tree stump with one shot. Entrants pay a small fee for a nail and proceeds will go to Cansa.
Appetite whetted yet? Then diarise the date, 29 August to 1 September, and the venue: George Agricultural Showgrounds, for some exciting stuff at this 155-year-old show. You simply can't miss it.
