Calling for comment on proposed Gwaiing Resort expansion

- Eugene Gunning

The process of expanding the Gwaiing Resort at the river mouth, for which preliminary clearing started in 2018, is currently in limbo pending the outcome of an application for a retrospective environmental approval.

According to the appointed independent environmental assessment practitioners,

Legacy Environmental Manage-ment Consulting (Pty) Ltd., George Municipality started clearing ±0,5 hectares of indigenous vegetation within a critically endangered ecosystem (Garden Route Granite Fynbos) without the necessary authorisation, and now has to apply for ex post facto (retrospective) approval, called a Section 24G Application. The application is currently in the pre-application phase. The 30-day comment period on the pre-application that started on 9 March has been extended due to the lockdown. Members of the public who wish to register as an interested and affected party (I&AP) are encouraged to submit written comments and/or requests to be registered as I&APs on or before 20 July. The relevant reports are available on the Legacy EMCs website (www.legacyemc.co.za), and can also be made available to I&APs via other electronic channels (i.e. Microsoft One Drive, We Transfer, WhatsApp).

Please note that whilst hard copies of the reports were placed at the Pacaltsdorp and George public libraries, these public places currently remain closed under Covid Alert Level 3.
