Investigation into mall incident still underway
The investigation into the physical altercation between a woman and a security guard that took place in the Garden Route Mall on Thursday
11 June, is ongoing.
This was confirmed by Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, earlier this week.
"The investigation is at a sensitive stage and has not been completed yet. Once it is completed the docket will be submitted to the senior public prosecutor for a decision," he said.
This comes after a video of the altercation went viral shortly after it was posted on Facebook in June.
According to eyewitnesses the woman entered the mall without a face mask and allegedly refused to wear one when asked to do so by the security guard.
"The woman entered the mall without wearing a mask shortly before closing time and the security guard stopped her," an eyewitness told George Herald the day after the incident.
"From what I could gather the security guard told her that she wasn't allowed to enter the mall without a face mask.
“They had words, a confrontation ensued and she slapped the guard through his face.
“That's when his cap and his mask went flying. In the video you can see it lying on the floor."
In the video, that started recording after the alleged slap, the woman and the security guard can be seen in a physical and verbal confrontation when out of nowhere a man, since established to be the woman’s fiancé, takes the security guard down with a flying tackle.
The struggle continues for a while before breaking up.
The man and woman who were involved in the confrontation with the security guard have since been banned from the mall.
According to the Fidelity
Security's national marketing and communications manager, Charnel Hattingh, the guard is doing well and has been back on duty since shortly after the incident.
