Come play golf and save lives with the NSRI

- Kristy Kolberg

Are you a golf lover with a heart as big as the fairway? NSRI Station 23 Wilderness is calling on golf enthusiasts, sponsors and anyone who would like to support a great cause while enjoying a day on the golf course, to join them for their inaugural golf day on 10 March at George Golf Club.

This fundraising event is proudly supported by Mitsubishi George and funds raised will be used to contribute to maintaining NSRI's high level of operational rescue services in the area.

Station 23 is a busy rescue station covering a 50km stretch of coastline from Lake Pleasant (Groenvlei) near Sedgefield to Herold’s Bay and all the inland dams, lakes and rivers. The passionate crew of volunteers have been serving the community since 1981 – not only for the area locals, but also for holidaymakers who visit and spend time at the beaches and waterways in the area.

The crew have become an integral part of the local emergency and rescue services and now operate from the main rescue base at Wilderness main beach and two satellite stations, in Herold’s Bay and Myoli Beach in Sedgefield.

NSRI rescue services are entirely manned by volunteers who are on call 24/7. NSRI volunteers are exceptional people who often risk their own lives to save others, without compensation.

According to station commander Michael Vonk, the crew is a cohesive, highly trained and motivated team of men and women, always ready to respond to any emergency call.

"Over and above the time conducting rescue or search operations, our volunteers spend many hours every week maintaining equipment and training to ensure proficiency in rescue techniques, maritime safety and emergency medical care. In addition to rescue capability, our sea rescue volunteers become involved in drowning prevention, including NSRI’s water-safety education programme, Pink Rescue Buoy Project, training of lifeguards, and our innovative CCTV camera project that is used to monitor some of our beaches," he said.

Your support of the inaugural NSRI Wilderness Golf Day will raise funds to help Station 23 to continue its lifesaving work.
