Businessman savagely attacked

- Kristy Kolberg

A businessman from George was attacked and seriously injured during a home invasion in Heatherlands on Saturday morning, 20 April at about 11:00.

According to information the victim was at home alone at the time of the incident as his wife and children had left the house earlier that morning.

After entering the house from the back garden, the victim found the suspect in one of the bedrooms with an iPad in his possession. A fight ensued and the suspect hit the victim over his head with a wooden rolling pin.

The suspect, a convicted offender under correctional supervision, was arrested and taken into custody.

The rolling pin broke, exposing the metal pen that holds it together. Not giving up, the suspect then proceeded to stab the victim with the metal pen. The victim sustained serious stab wounds to his head and neck and was hospitalised.

The suspect tried to flee on foot, but his freedom was short-lived since he was apprehended minutes later by neighbours who had heard the commotion and hurried to the scene to assist. The suspect, a convicted offender under correctional supervision, was arrested and taken into custody. Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies confirmed the incident. "The suspect demanded access to the safe and an altercation [with the victim] followed before he fled the scene.

“The victim sustained head injuries and

was taken for medical care. The 31-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with house robbery," said Spies.

The victim has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

He told George Herald that he was extremely impressed with the investigating officer in charge of the case and grateful for

all the support he and his family received throughout the ordeal.

"Thank you for the amazing service from our neighbourhood watch and meticulous work from our police force, all the support from the community, ambulance services and Mediclinic George for their outstanding work," said the victim.
