Thom Hughes of Perron, Joburg
For my holidays I want action, atmosphere, culture and great food and drink. If it’s the bush or seaside, then most definitely! If it’s a city, absolutely not!
I lived in London for nearly 10 years. It’s a melting pot of cultures and, as a result, a melting pot of amazing food.
The best meal I ever had on holiday was clam vongole in Liguria, Italy. It was a seaside lunch overlooking a little bay – clams, sea air, freshly made pasta, Parmesan and the best Italian white wine I’ve ever drunk.
Laos in Southeast Asia really surprised me. It’s got so much French influence that at times
I felt like I was walking in Paris. Nothing quite beats the Alps
– the après-ski drinks, wintery Swiss/French/German cuisine and the beauty of snow-capped mountains. Going snowboarding with my best friends is something I do quite regularly.
As a child, I remember watching Keith Floyd on Sunday nights – he drank wine live on TV! Watching him cook and drink somehow made an impact on me.
The one place in SA everyone should visit is the KZN Midlands. Green dairy farms, trout fishing and delicious food, with the Drakensberg foothills as backdrop. Thailand is my absolute favourite, for no other reason than the food. I am obsessed with Thai food. The diving, beer and beaches aren’t too shabby either. Perron, aka the Mexican Appreciation Society, has branches in Illovo, Bryanston and Melville. Check out Taco Tuesdays. perron.co.za
