04 JUST FOR TWO COTTAGE

BAVIAANSKLOOF, EASTERN CAPE

-

________

How ironic, given the name, that I found myself at this heavenly cottage in Cedar Falls Base Camp on my own. I’d wanted to return to this spot in soulful Baviaanskloof ever since I came across it while hiking the Leopard Trail, so I was smiling in anticipation all the way along the rutted track to my destination. Some places resonate with me, and this was one of them. Once there, I luxuriated in the silence.

I made a fire and the moon illuminated the silhouetted mountains around me. The wind blew gently down the valley folds, brushed leaves and lifted my hair. Soon paraffin lamps glowed orange through the cottage windows.

There’s a 10-minute walk to a stone labyrinth and early the next morning I traced my way along its 28 turns, alone with my thoughts. I reached the centre and leant against a rock, cool against my back, and felt privileged to be in this special place.

Yes, adventuring with your partner is important. It’s fun to share what you discover, but it’s also necessary to spend time on your own. The cottage may be called ‘Just For Two’ but it’s also perfectly lovely for one.

ROMANTIC ELEMENT The outdoor bathtub set under the gaze of age-old mountains.

DO IT Cedar Falls Base Camp is an hour and a half from Uniondale along dirt roads passable with a sedan, and is 196 kilometres from George Airport. The cottage is totally off the grid, with gas and paraffin to light your way, cook your food and heat your water. From R980 (sleeps two). 074-939-4395, gobaviaans.co.za
