1Experiment

with your tresses My mom owned a hair salon in Texas. She didn’t have babysitters, so she’d pick [my sister Beyoncé and I] up from school, and we’d spend evenings at the salon. We saw women cut their hair one day and get extensions the next; the transformation was powerful. So when we were little, we both cut off all of our hair, then we said, “Put it back!” She encouraged us to try things – that was huge.

2Play

with makeup I go for it – with colour, shapes… it doesn’t scare me, because I know it comes off. TRY [1] Rimmel Oh My Gloss! in 190 (R79.95).

3Invest

in your inner beauty When Kiehl’s asked me to collaborate with them, I was super excited – the company has a long history of giving back. Proceeds go to organisations important to me: Son of a Saint, which helps fatherless boys in New Orleans and beyond; 14+ Foundation, which builds schools in Africa; and donorschoose.org, for education programmes. 4Celebrate your beauty icons Diana Ross is a classic. She’s defined beauty in such a timeless, artful way.

5Find

a sunscreen you’ll actually wear I used to think, ‘I’m black, I don’t need SPF.’ Totally untrue! My issue is sunscreen sometimes leaves that weird white mask, but I love [2] Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream SPF50 (R545) because it doesn’t do that.

6When

it comes to your skin, do as Halle Berry does Halle Berry has washed her face every night since she was 14. I heard that and thought, ‘It’s time to get it together!’ She’s almost 50 and looks my age (29). I’m trying to wash every night; I use [3] Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Lotion (R76.28).

7Take

a dance class for glow Learning hip hop makes me feel super radiant, though I really embarrassed myself at my last dance class. Luckily, it was in New Orleans – so there’s no evidence online!

8Embrace

humidity and co-washing I stand outside the shower and let the steam make my hair bigger. Also, I never really shampoo, instead I co-wash [using only conditioner on my hair].

9Let

your signature style evolve I used to be all about the vibrant lip, but lately I’ve put the focus on my eyes.

10Be

inspired by your friends I look to my incredibly beautiful and talented friends for inspiration. We all identify beauty by our own terms. And at the end of the day, no one takes themselves too seriously – myself included!
