The concealer pencil

“The perfect touch-up solution on the go,” explains Sharon Dowsett, Maybelline New York makeup director. “Sharpen it regularly to keep it clean.” TRY Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil (R295).

The eyeshadow pencil

“These are much quicker to use in a hurry than palettes and brushes,” Sharon says. “Use a pencil for daytime, then top up from a palette for your evening look.” TRY Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow in Moon River (R790).

The eyeliner pencil

“You get a softer finish than with liquid liner,” says makeup artist Caroline Barnes. “Blend kohl into an eyeshadow if you want more of a smoky effect.” TRY GOSH Velvet Touch Eyeliner in I Sea You (R115).

The brow pencil

“It leaves a denser shape and stays on longer than a pen,” explains Caroline. “Draw fine, hairlike strokes for a natural effect.” TRY Maybelline New York Brow Satin Smoothing Duo Brow Pencil & Filling Powder (R109.95).

The lip pencil

“Apply a peachtinted balm,” Sharon advises. “Then use a beige lip liner on top to create a ‘nude stocking’ effect.” Sharpen your lip pencil after every use to help keep it hygienic and free from bacteria. TRY Revlon Colorstay Lip Liner in Nude (R169).

The highlighting pencil

“It’s very easy to overapply with a liquid, so pencils are best for precision,” advises Caroline. And it’s not just for eyes, either. “After lipgloss, line your Cupid’s bow to make your lips look fuller.” TRY NYX Wonder Stick (R199.95).

The nail pencil

“This gives a groomed finish,” reveals nail expert Jessica Hoffman. “Soften it with a hairdryer, then run it under your nail from side to side.” TRY Essence Nailwhite Pencil (R24.95).
