“When I moved to Cape Town in 2014, I joined an online dating site in the hopes of meeting interesting people. Hardly a week had passed and I was over the idea. But a few of months later, I logged into my account to deactivate it and I saw a message in my inbox from a girl called Sam. She was living in Hong Kong and wanted to get together when she came to Cape Town for a holiday. I responded and we went from chatting on the site to talking on Whatsapp and then to daily Skype calls. We had a huge amount in common and there was an instant connection between us. The fact that she was so far removed from everything around me also gave me the courage to be myself in a way I had never been able to before. We fell in love with each other before she had even landed in the city.

“The day before Sam was due to arrive, I saw several missed calls on my phone and when I phoned her back, she said, ‘I’m standing outside your front door. Please come and get me!’ I was taken by surprise and charmed.

“Sam spent three weeks in Cape Town and during that time, we spoke frankly about our feelings and about the possibility of her moving to SA. The connection was undeniable – it felt as if our lives had lined up to our meeting. Three months later she was back and we moved in together. We’ve been inseparable ever since and in April 2015, I proposed to her with my grandmother’s wedding ring.”
