“A friend of a friend had a chinchilla cat who just had kittens with a regular tabby. She promised that I could have one in eight weeks time, so I set a reminder for that date on my phone. The day came, I contacted her and she pulled out of the deal.

“I was seriously upset. I had also just got paid for one of my first big blog jobs that day, and thought to myself, ‘I will have a kitten by the end of the day.’ I even remember, saying dramatically to my colleague: ‘I woke up today ready to be a cat mom!’

“That’s when I went on Gumtree and found Milan, a cross between a chinchilla Persian and a regular Persian.

“All it took was one look at that flat face in the picture and I just knew that he was destined to be mine. I picked him up from the breeder that same evening after work. He has short legs, which means he can’t jump higher than a couch or the bed. That has its perks, because I don’t have to worry about mischief on my tabletops or him escaping the property and running onto the road. But it does mean he needs me more. He loves being around me, so he meows for me to help him onto the desktop so he can hang with me in my home office and ‘help’.

“And I’ve had cats all my life, so I’m used to the trips to the groomers and regular brushing.”
