DO meet Alex Mcgregor

-

This Capetonian is looking to become our next Hollywood export.

“I feel like I’ve been acting since I got out the womb. I’ve always known I wanted to be in the industry,” says brunette bombshell Alex Mcgregor. And while infant ambition might seem a little extreme, the 24-year-old did win her first spot in the limelight – delivering a line in a German car commercial – when she was just six. From there, it was just a hop, skip and jump to becoming the face of the kids division at Storm Models, signing with the Cape Town agency APM and securing a part in the TV series Charlie Jade at age 10.

“At first my parents weren’t keen on me working in such a harsh industry, but once they saw how passionate I was, they changed their minds,” she says.

Her first feature film role was in the teen franchise Spud. “I still get recognised as Christine,” she says of the role. Then, after matriculating, she landed the lead in local movie Impunity, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. Now her focus is on international projects. “My manager in New York sends info on casting calls and I audition via self-tape.”

And there is a dollop of luck and timing in there, too. Earlier this year, for example, she was cast in the pilot Searchers, which she describes as “eye-opening in terms of understanding how the US industry works.” And even though the pilot wasn’t picked up, it did mean that she was able to join the Warner Brothers family.

For the moment, you can see her doing her thing as Karma d’argento in the series Blood Drive, and as Susan Delgado, love interest to Idris Elba’s Gunslinger in The Dark Tower, out this month.

“I love being able to draw on different emotions to tell people’s stories,” she says. And when she isn’t doing that? “You’ll find me hanging out at the beach or enjoying a good burger with my boyfriend, Bjorn Steinbach. He’s an actor, too!”
