End with a little cultural blending in the form of crispy Nutella-filled spring rolls (R32).

Then there’s the appeal of dishes like Nok Phad Prik Thai Orn (ostrich or beef with lime, curry paste and coconut milk; R138/R150), Salmon Panang with poached pears (R189) or the Aromatic Duck with pancakes (R220).

Joburg Wang Thai Cnr 5th St and Rivonia Rd, Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton; 011 784 8484

Now approaching 20 years in the business, Wang Thai is as good for work meetings as it is for romantic dinners. The signature Ped Pi Roed (duck stir-fry; R162) strikes a delectable balance between sweet and sour, and the meat dishes include a great Massaman Kha Gae (lamb shank with peanut masala curry; R165). Just add a side of egg-fried rice (R26) and vegetable noodles (R75). Leave room for the deep-fried ice cream (R60). Fantastic!

Kong Cedar Rd, The Terrace at Cedar Square, Fourways; 011 465 7516

Sushiitto On South South Rd, Morningview Centre, Morningside; 011 056 7361

Don’t be fooled by the modest storefront. The flavours here would do credit to a far grander establishment! We loved the wasabi bombs (rice, salmon and wasabi mayo; R45) for starters, while the salmon and prawn salad (R145), and butternut, spinach and cream cheese dim sum (R45) make for tasty mains.
