City-proof your skin

Healthy, happy skin

-

there are many plus sides to living an urban life, but one of the big minuses is the effects of pollution. “There are several different forms, but in general, all pollution attacks skin in a similar way,” explains Dr Tom Mammone, president of skin physiology and pharmacology at Estée Lauder and Clinique.

The skin, which is the body’s most absorbent organ and the first point of contact, is very susceptible to external toxins, which can accelerate the ageing process, leading to inflammation, dehydration and pigmentation.

But fear not, city dwellers, we have your antipollution cheat sheet for a clear complexion right here!

“There are two main types of pollution that can be harmful to your skin,” says Clarins’ scientific communications director, MarieHélène Lair. “These are urban pollution, which is the result of smoke, air conditioning particles and car emissions; and environmental pollution, such as cold weather, hard water and constant sun exposure.”

So, what do we do, move to the countryside? There’s a less extreme complexion fix: “Products that are enriched with antipollution protection ingredients, SPF and purifying antioxidants will help protect skin from the harmful effects of your surroundings,” says Mariehélène.

“UV rays are a big trigger for cell mutation, so start with SPF,” skin expert and facialist Vaishaly Patel advises. “After that, opt for products rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin E. Your goal is to protect the rest of your cells from the harmful free radical damage, as well as preventing the formation of new free radicals.”

Makeup can also play a part. “Makeup with SPF and antioxidants can add another layer of defence,” says Dr Mammone. “But, use them in conjunction with a great skincare routine, not just as an alternative.”

So, instead of heading for greener pastures, fill your beauty arsenal with these modern pollution warriors to protect your skin and give you a glowing, rested complexion.
