What you need to know about dry shampoo Scalp-health truths
How do you know if you’ve gone too far? Learn these scalp-health truths now.
It’s hard to remember pre-dry shampoo life. But after one woman went viral when she blamed dry shampoo for her hair loss, pros have said it can lead to scalp issues. Here’s what you need to know now.
Don’t replace the real thing
Whether you use it for volume or to stretch out washes, “dry shampoo is not a cleanser – it’s simply a powder that sops up excess oil,” says scientist and hair loss expert Lars Skjoth. “It can dry the scalp, causing reactions like dermatitis, dandruand folliculitis, an infection that may scar the hair follicle.” Trichologist Dr Anabel Kingsley adds: “Real shampoo is the only way to remove dead cells, sweat and oil.”
Find your cleansing MO
Most of us should wash every two days for scalp health, says Dr Kingsley, but if you have scalp issues (like dandru ), wash daily and use dry shampoo only on the lengths. Curly, coarse or coloured hair needs twice-weekly washes with dry shampoo in between. Why dry? Aerosols are great for volume. TRY [4] COLAB Extreme Volume Dry Shampoo (R49.95).
Take a break
“Your scalp is an extension of your face,” says skincare educator Christyn Nawrot. “It’s okay to use dry shampoo, but detox and exfoliate.” Here’s what helps. To soothe irritation [1] Schwarzkopf Professional BC Scalp Therapy Serum (R334).
To balance oil [2] Mizani Comfiderm Scalp Oil (R169). To boost circulation “Brushing stimulates your scalp to boost hair growth,” Christyn says. TRY [3] Tangle Teezer Aqua Splash (R290) which can be used in the shower. To get rid of flakes [5] Philip Kingsley Exfoliating Scalp Mask (R185).
