Beautiful Trauma

- By Robert Harris by Åsa Avdic by Lucy

From feel-good hits and power anthems to heartfelt ballads, Pink always delivers, so of course her latest album is a hot property. We suggest playing this at the start of your day as her potent voice and kick-butt attitude will have you feeling enthused, empowered and ready to take on the world. Key track ‘Where We Go’ Get it To power up. A master of suspense, ex journalist Robert Harris is on sure ground with this historical novel, set on the eve of WWII. The slow start picks up pace, with cinematic descriptions of looming tragedy, from swastika banners to the anti-aircraft guns, and a cast that includes Neville Chamberlain, Adolf Hitler and two university friends who meet when the future hangs in the balance. Intelligent and fascinating. Swedish journalist Åsa Avdic makes her fiction debut with this smart thriller. Workaholic single mother Anna Francis joins six other candidates on a remote island – all part of an assessment process for a secret intelligence job. Her assignment: to observe the reaction of her colleagues to her own alleged murder. An unsettling look into a dystopian future, The Dying Game is an excellent mix of Dave Eggers’ The Circle and Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, but with a slower burn.

Move over Bridget Jones, there’s a quirky new singleton in town! Ellie Knight is a 20-something Londoner whose life isn’t working out as hoped (to put it mildly). Stuck in an awful job and an even more awful flat, Ellie must confront the challenges of dating apps and homesharing, while her friends have abandoned late-night clubbing in favour of husbands and babies. Laugh-out-loud moments as well as sad ones make this a fun and heartwarming read.
