Intelligent and fascinating. Swedish journalist Åsa Avdic makes her fiction debut with this smart thriller. Workaholic single mother Anna Francis joins six other candidates on a remote island – all part of an assessment process for a secret intelligence job. Her assignment: to observe the reaction of her colleagues to her own alleged murder. An unsettling look into a dystopian future, The Dying Game is an excellent mix of Dave Eggers’ The Circle and Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, but with a slower burn.

The vanilla, baobab and ginger jar (R60) is a must. This intimate beachfront spot, with its terrific vibe, is ideal for cosy chit-chat. The Beets (pickled beetroot, goat’s cheese and pine nut in puff pastry parcels; R65) makes for a lovely starter, and lamb cutlets with baby potatoes (R220) are a great main.
