Relaxed take on tailoring
Joburg-based Mathew Nolim, head designer of Matte Nolim, shares his tips on how to don relaxed tailoring. 1 FOLLOW THE RULES
When it comes to fit, there’s one simple rule to follow: always have at least two fingers worth of space between yourself and the garment. It creates comfort and shape simultaneously.
2 MIX IT UP
Bring a hint of sportiness, such as sneakers or slides, to your tailored look to tone down an otherwise formal ensemble.
3 CONSIDER PROPORTIONS
Fit and proportion is key to a great tailored outfit. You need to balance things out, especially if you still want to display your shape. So if you’re wearing a slouchy blazer, add a belt to emphasise your waist.
4 OWN YOUR LOOK
And while you’re at it, try to have fun with it. For example, go for a minimalistic two-piece that has a racer stripe down the leg – it’s simple, yet playful.
