Skin and the city
It’s time to ght for your glow
City living is not only fast paced and stressful, it’s harmful to your skin, too! “Studies show that those in urban areas are more prone to oiliness, sensitivity, and rough and uneven skin texture,” explains Dr Ian Webster, dermatologist and owner of online skin portal Dermastore (dermastore.co.za). “These can be chronic, leading to long-term issues like premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and a compromised skin barrier (which is important to protect you from outside aggressors).” WHAT’S THE HARM?
“Pollution molecules are 20 times smaller than your pores,” explains Dr Judey Pretorius, a biochemical scientist for Cape Town’s Biomedical Emporium. “They create free radicals, highly unstable molecules with unpaired electrons which deplete and destroy necessary proteins. The result? Inflammation and, in extreme cases, DNA damage and cell mutation, which can lead to cancer.”

The secret weapon against free radicals? Antioxidants. “Look for products with vitamins B, C and E,” says Dr Pretorius. But also go for ingredients that exfoliate and calm inflammation. “These include alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic and salicylic), vitamin A (retinol or retinyl palmitate), ferulic and phytic acid, polyphenols, liquorice and aloe vera,” adds skin therapist Sonette Donker of Skin ID. “A broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must,” adds Dr Webster. “Together with antioxidants, you’ll be protected against 96% of all sources of free radicals.”
