The women who made me

-

By photographer Aart Verrips

Durban-born photographer Aart Verrips, 26, is the rising talent behind this issue’s cover. After studying to be a chef in France, he returned to SA to further his culinary career. Two years later and a move to Joburg, the selftaught photographer has shot for the likes of Thebe Magugu, Rich Mnisi and Adidas. Here, he credits the women who have inspired him and made him into the person he is today. MY MOTHER Maretha Verrips is one of the most amazing, honest and hardworking women I know in my life. A role model for both my work and personal life, she left her job to start her own business with my father while simultaneously raising two kids (and we were quite a handful!). And she always thinks of others before herself – which is something she has passed down to me.

MY SISTER Louise Verrips was diagnosed with cancer at just 26. But with her sheer determination and courage, she fought and overcame it. She’s always been a strong-minded woman, and fights through any challenges – something that’s always so empowering to witness. I’ve always looked up to her and admired my big sister, as she’s helped me become the man I am today.

MY GRANDMOTHER Louise Groenewald has been through a lot in her lifetime, but the one thing I commend the most about her is that she still has the soul of a 20-year-old – even in her 60s. A wonderful grandmother and a second mother to me, I’m so thankful to have her in my life. MY BEST FRIEND Robyn Newman is just an amazing human being. Always there to pick me up when I’m down or having a bad day, she’s taught me that no matter what obstacles I may face, I can beat them and be a better person at the end of it. BETTY WHITE Ever since I could remember, I’ve always been a huge fan of actress Betty White. My earliest memory of her is when I was younger and watching Golden Girls. She’s an icon and represents what we should do in life: work hard and fight for what you want.
