Go! Drive & Camp

WHAT CAMPING FRIENDS ARE FOR

-

I took a special interest in Anita Homann’s column “All’s well that ends well” in your January issue. We too spent a couple of days at Storms River Mouth Rest Camp last year. This was part of a 5 000 km, two-week road trip. We first arrived at Storms River one afternoon and went to our allocated campsite right next to the sea. The wind was howling and we realised that it would make things very unpleasant for us in our rooftop tent. While deciding what to do, we noticed a couple with a caravan packing up and moving to a more protected area a little “inland”. So we also moved “inland” and set up camp next to the couple with the caravan. And, as they were battling with the parachute-like rally tent, we went over and held it down for them. When we chatted to the couple afterwards they told us they live in Kimberley, which is where I was born. The next day we watched seagulls eating some leftover food near our campsite and even saw two gulls mating. The couple next to us snapped some photos. Anita and Christo, it was so nice to meet you guys and to camp next to you. Our time in Storms River was awesome, despite the wind. We loved the walk to the suspension bridge and having a beer at the restaurant afterwards. The scenery in all directions is magnificent. The park is clean and staff are very hands-on. It’s a highly recommended destination, but be prepared to be blown away – literally. STEVE NUNS AND DELWYNNE SWARTZ Roodepoort
