Build a bed

-

An oblong tent bag hangs lengthwise above the righthand-side panel with the bed that folds out underneath it. The awning – which is folded up inside the tent bag – opens up over the bed to keep out the sun and rain. If you want to fold out the awning you have to do it before you fold out the bed, otherwise you won’t reach it. The awning has an aluminium beam on the side and stands on adjustable tent poles which you anchor with ropes. Another two poles – also adjustable – swing out from the side of the beam and extends to the body. These poles help keep the canvas taut and prevents rainwater pooling on the roof. The bed is 83 cm wide and is suspended by four cables when you fold it out. The cables are attached to the inside of the body. On top of the folded-out surface is a second surface – this rests on two sliding frame tracks and pulls out like a drawer 62 cm towards you to make the bed slightly larger than a king size. Four adjustable tent poles fit underneath the bed surface for further support. The seam of the tent that stretches over the bed pulls over the edge of it and stays in place with an elastic in the seam. It’s enough to keep the bugs out, but there is a small gap where the two panels join – a gap where a pesky mosquito can enter. (To tighten the roof over the bed a bit more you have to climb inside.) Two equally big cupboards are to the right of the bed on top of each other. It’s a good place to put a tarp or a skottel or big pots. The battery is in the bottom cupboard and takes up about half of the space. A hand-held shower is behind a smaller panel above the two cupboards and has an extension piece if you’re using the separate shower tent (it comes standard with the Xcape).
