KAKAMAS IS FILLED WITH GOOD SAMARITANS

- DANIE AND SUSAN BORNMAN Heilbron

We decided to go on a tour of the West Coast with our friends Ben and Petra van Wyk. Just like us, they tow a Conqueror Commander off-road caravan. The first night we stayed at Augrabies and the next day we headed to Springbok. We’d hardly set off when the bolts that attach the axle to the chassis broke off and we were left stranded. All the local passers-by offered assistance and we were humbled by their concern. Every single person who passed in a bakkie offered to help. Jaco Crafford, a farmer who lives nearby, brought his tractor with fork lift and helped to get the caravan out of the road. He even gave me a lift to Kakamas so I could order the right parts to fix the caravan. While the guys from Fit It, a tyre company in Kakamas, went to work on the caravan, Jaco showed us his farm. At his house his wife, Annelien, spoiled us with delicious grapes, sultanas, peaches, prickly pears, freshly picked figs and peach chutney. So many people offered to help that we can’t remember everyone. To all of them: Thank you very much. Even Oom Jan (I can’t remember his surname) who offered us a spot to camp next to the river, we would definitely like to take you up on the offer one day. We made so many new friends in Kakamas, and it was just three hours before we could hit the road again.
