Toyota has announced it’s developed a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), six-speed manual transmission, two-litre engine, and new four-wheeldrive systems. This new technology forms part of Toyota’s so-called “global architecture”. The new CVT is more efficient, especially at low speeds, because there are less mechanical losses and a wider gear range improves shift tracking which improves gear changes. The new six-speed manual transmission is 7 kg lighter and 24 mm shorter than their existing gearbox, which makes it one of the smallest manual transmissions in the world and features lower fuel consumption. Thanks to iMT (intelligent manual transmission), the gear changes are silky smooth because engine speed is adjusted when you shift between gears. And the new 2 ℓ engine with “Dynamic Force” ensures higher combustion efficiency and therefore less harmful emissions. Toyota has also developed two new four-wheel-drive systems to lower fuel consumption and deliver the best possible handling, stability and off-road performance. One system sends torque independently to the left and right wheels depending on road conditions. The other system uses a disconnect system that employs a clutch in the axles for the front and rear wheels. This clutch can disengage the rear axle and send all the engine power to the front wheels when you choose two-wheel drive. Apparently, it lowers energy loss and improves fuel consumption. Toyota aims to use TNGA power sources in 80% of all their Toyota and Lexus vehicles within the next five years. >
