You need a jack to lift your vehicle when you have a flat tyre and also when you get stuck. But which kind of jack is the best for off-roading?

- Text Cyril Klopper Graphics Dominic Wienand

The English origin of the word “jack” comes from a generic name applied contemptuously to a young working man of the lower classes. It was later used especially when referring to sailors who drank heavily (think Jack Sparrow). But the “jack” in the context of a lifting device has a far racier origin. In the US, during the early 1900s, “jack” was synonymous with “erect”. We won’t dwell on the matter… No one knows who came up with the very first jack. Leonardo da Vinci sketched a few, but we probably have the ancient Greeks to thank for this handy invention. We look at four kinds of jacks that you should have in your vehicle. A wise man will always have at least one kind, but a 4x4 prof will try to take all of them.
