Go! Drive & Camp

A ray of light in our driveway

- MIAS AND BESSIE BEZUIDENHOUT Secunda

Mist was hanging over Secunda when we got up at 7:00. Another miserable lockdown day, I thought as I looked out the window. The mist made me even more morbid. Hopefully the sun would come out soon. Shortly before the lockdown, we spent a month at the Dube Reserve with my brother André and sister, Elna Janse van Vuuren, who came all the way from the Netherlands. It was lovely in the reserve and a special experience for Elna. She couldn’t believe that you could stand a mere 10 metres from a giraffe. The month flew by, of course, and we got back home in time for Elna to make arrangements so she could get home before lockdown.

Our planned holiday at the sea in the Cape had to be cancelled and our visit to Yellow Sands and the Addo in the Eastern Cape will have to wait for another day. It gives us time to plan some more and check out magazines to see what other campsites and attractions are available there. I switched on the kettle for a cup of coffee and stepped outside to switch off the lights on the patio. The pavement was still wet with dew and I could see how the layer of dust on our Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Ranger were getting more visible. That dust comes from standing undercover and not from a dirt road. I was thinking I should make an effort to wash them, or maybe just hose them down. Imagine my delight when I saw the rolled-up May issue of Drive & Camp behind the Jeep. The misery disappeared like mist before the sun – it made my day, no, my whole week. Everything suddenly felt okay. And now we look forward to coming issues. If we can’t drive and camp ourselves, we can certainly still read about it. And what great memories are evoked when you read about a place where you too have been. Thank you for the magazine and the unexpected delivery.

Drive & Camp does indeed get delivered to subscribers who opted for home delivery, even during lockdown. Unfortunately this does not apply to subscribers who have their copies delivered via the regular postal service since the Post Office has ceased delivery during the pandemic. Drive & Camp is also available at news agents and book shops. – Ed.
