CLARENDON High School pupil, Kimberly Cameron, competed at this year’s Herald Matric of the Year competition and came out victorious in the cultural category for her dancing.

Cameron, 18, who was nominated by her school to represent them in the competition, was one of 20 boys and girls chosen as finalists, and invit- ed to Port Elizabeth in September to perform.

The competition focused on various aspects such as academic achievements, sports, and community service, and the winners were announced on October 2.

Apart from being credited for her aca- demic achievements and community service, Cameron also won one of the excellence categories for culture.

The matric pupil, who enjoys dancing and the outdoors, also competed in Rustenburg as part of the Eastern Cape dance team this year.

She then went on to compete as part of the South African team at the World Championships of Performing Arts, which were held in Los Angeles.

“The best part about that whole experience was just being there in LA, knowing that I was representing something so much bigger than just us as individuals, that I was representing South Africa,” Cameron said.

The contemporary dancer won several medals and a shortterm bursary – she could not use the bursary this year however, as she is still completing matric.

Cameron said she planned to go to the University of Free State next year to further her studies.
