More than 30 cyclists to take on St Bernard’s EL to PE challenge

-

IT’S cycling time of year again for St Bernard’s Hospice, as they prepare for their eighth annual cycle challenge. This year, more than 30 cyclists will take to the roads from Queenstown, East London and Port Elizabeth to raise funds for the non-profit organisation (NPO).

The GO! & Express are once again the media sponsors of the event and will keep you up to date with the build-up, progress and outcome of the challenge.

St Bernard’s Hospice is committed to serving the entire community by providing home-based palliative care through specialised physical, social, emotional and spiritual support.

The hospice prides itself on providing palliative care to patients of all ages, who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

St Bernard’s marketing manager Trystan Haynes said: “St Bernard’s Hospice requires R5.5-million per annum to provide such services, and our target for our Cycle Challenge is R400 000.”

“These funds will enable our organisation to send carers and professional nurses into homes, where families may be advised and supported over and above the care and pain management most of their patients require.”

The cycle challenge first took place in 2007, which saw three hospice staff members and two volunteers cycling from East London to Port Elizabeth to test the waters regarding logistics etc.

In 2008, it was opened to the public and has been a success story ever since.

This event has since grown from a mere five, to more than 30 cyclists gathering in order to raise funds and awareness for the organisation.

The St Bernard’s Hospice Cycle Challenge kicks off on Sunday November 21 in Queenstown, where 13 of the 33 cyclists will take on the Super Hero Challenge, cycling 800km over six days.

They will complete a round trip from Queenstown, to Port Elizabeth, and back to East London.

Companies and individuals that wish to support the event, the cyclists, and the cause, may do so by contacting Trystan Haynes on (043) 721-0051.

Join in to help St Bernard’s Hospice provide care for your loved ones in need.
