PAINT THE TOWN RED

- MADELEINE CHAPUT

THE Dramatic Society of East London presents the cabaret titled Woman,n (w?m?n) at the Alexander Playhouse today and tomorrow with the proceeds going to a local charity supporting victims of domestic violence.

Directed by Pieter Taljaard, Woman,n

(w?m?n) is a one-woman cabaret that exposes what it means to be a woman in a persistent patriarchal society.

Compiled by and starring Jo Stemmet, the cabaret comprises of an array of monologues, poetry and songs, including the work of Sylvia Plath and Maya Angelou, as well as Eve Ensler’s enlightening work from her famous book, The Vagina Monologues.

Audiences can expect songs from a variety of artists and beloved theatre productions, including Otto Titsling as performed by Betty Midler in Beaches, Funny Honey from the musical Chicago through to Aerosmith’s

Pink and Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang.

A large portion of ticket sales will be donated to Victory House – a safe house for abused women. There will also be a donation box in the foyer of the theatre at each performance.

“We encourage audiences to bring all kinds of feminine products to place in the box, which we will then delivered to Victory House,” Stemmet said.

Sometimes tragic and poignant and sometimes hysterically funny, the cabaret enlightens audiences with a refreshing perspective on womanhood.

“I hope to make women feel proud, accepted and supported – which is hard to find in our society. The show will also create an intense awareness of what is going on around us on a daily basis. The show is humorous at times but it is also very real and raw,” Stemmet said.

Tickets are available at Lee Gold Music at R90. Thereafter a telephonic reservation needs to be made at (043) 735-1412.

Doors open at 7pm and audiences can bring their own drinks and snacks. Please note this production is strictly for a mature audience.
