AFTER a highly successful four-week tour in Thailand, Guy Buttery returns to South Africa with a string of concerts, including one at The Arts Theatre on Sunday.
Buttery said it was his first time in Asia, and, although the people in Thailand were friendly and all his shows sold out, he is happy to be back home.
With a nationwide tour already under his belt in the first half of this year, featuring Shane Cooper, and another tour with long-time collaborator Nibs van der Spuy, Buttery went on to also work with internationally acclaimed virtuosos Thomas Leeb and US guitar hero Kaki King.
Buttery made his mark with back-to-back shows all over the Eastern Cape in anticipation for his National Arts Festival return this week.
As an internationally recognised musician, this multi-instrumentalist enjoys invitations to play sell-out performances all over the globe.
The US, UK, Australia, France, Brazil, and Italy have all welcomed him back year after year.
However, to simply label Buttery as one of South Africa’s musical phenomenons would be an injustice.
His international role has surpassed merely performing concerts to foreign audiences. It has evolved into one as an ambassador of South African music, inspiring people across the world with his home-grown style at the very heart of his talent and tenacity.
Buttery’s distinct unification of South African guitar music is the musical advocate for everything positive and beautiful about the place he calls home.
At the age of 18, Buttery’s debut album was nominated for best newcomer and best instrumental at the South African Music Awards (Samas), making him the youngest nominee in the history of the event. Guy then went on to collect two Samas in 2010 and again in 2014.
He has also received numerous other major national accolades, including The Standard Bank Ovation Award for his live performances at the National Arts Festival, and has been honoured with more of these prestigious awards than any other artist.
Buttery describes his music as the “conjoining of genres” bringing about different music genres in his work, creating something new.
And something new is what East Londoners can expect as Buttery promises something totally brand new and unique for his show at The Arts Theatre.
